It's happening again..... more new legislation for employers to ponder......
On June 19, 2018, the Senate of Canada passed the final version of the Cannabis Act Bill C-45, which will come into effect on October 17, 2018.
The Ontario Government already has strict rules in place to ensure workplace safety. Consuming recreational cannabis in the workplace is illegal, and will continue to be after legalization. Employers should know the rules surrounding medical cannabis as they will be required to address any workplace hazards that arise. Marijuana consumption has a decades-old stigma, and since stigmas go hand in hand with misinformation and confusion, it is important for employers to understand the legislation and clearly communicate workplace expectations, responsibilities, and policies with their staff. Being proactive and implementing the right policies and programs can help ensure your business operations are not adversely affected.
